Friday May 1st
Doors Open at 6
Outdoor screening begins at 8PM
Directed Herbert Biberman
1h 34m
Herbert Biberman's SALT OF THE EARTH (1954) is one of the first fully independent films produced in the United States. This was out of necessity as the filmmakers were completely blacklisted from Hollywood during the Second Red Scare (the director was one of the infamous Hollywood Ten who refused to answer questions from the House Un-American Activities Committee). Inspired by and based on a true story, the film follows a group of workers and their families in New Mexico as they strike against a Zinc mining company for better working and living conditions — and transform their union and community in the process. Undermined and suppressed at every stage of production and distribution for its radical content, the film is a testament to the power of solidarity of everyday people across various lines of division.
Join us before the outdoor screening for light refreshments and camaraderie to celebrate May Day.
All proceeds will be donated to the local immigrant justice group, Migra Watch.
